June 28th, 2020 No comments

Press release
Zurich – Hamburg, 29th June 2020

Just in time for the introduction of the “QR bill” in Switzerland, Marei Peischl (peiTeX TeXnical Solutions, Hamburg) and Alex Antener (foobar LLC, Zurich) publish the LaTeX based QRbill template under the LaTeX Project Public License (LPPL).

Thanks to the stringent, simple, clear and well-arranged structure, the template created and published following the specifications of SIX Interbank Clearing Ltd can easily be implemented in a variety of accounting and billing applications and thus used again. The published template is based on the guidelines issued for Switzerland and intentionally has a modular structure to enable further development and adaptation for use across national borders.

The official package can be downloaded from the archive of the CTAN – Comprehensive TeX Archive Network at the following URL: https://ctan.org/pkg/qrbill

The contact to take care of the official template can be written to via the email address qrbill@peitex.de while the issue tracker is here.

The two companies peiTeX and foobar LLC are both technology companies that support their decades of historically grown experience in specialised areas with a strong open source and free software background.

rebooting OpenWRT

May 10th, 2016 No comments

OpenWRT is rebooting into “LEDE project”.

Members of the project already include a significant share of the most active members of the OpenWrt community. We intend to bring new life to Embedded Linux development by creating a community with a strong focus on transparency, collaboration and decentralisation.

LEDE’s stated goals are:

  • Building a great embedded Linux distribution with focus on stability and functionality.
  • Having regular, predictable release cycles coupled with community provided device testing feedback.
  • Establishing transparent decision processes with broad community participation and public meetings.

YBTI @32C3

youbroketheman There will be a “You broke the internet” / We fix the net” assembly @32C3 organised by GnuNet.

Currently it takes enthusiasts to fill in the gaps between what researchers and companies have released and turn it into something that actually works for the population. We think we need incentives to polish the protocol stack of a GNU Internet, and by GNU we mean that the involved software needs to be free as in free speech, and that we need regulation to actually deploy an upgrade of the Internet to a version that protects its participants from eavesdropping and social correlation.

23 years of Linux

August 25th, 2014 No comments

Congratulations, Linus Torvalds, and thanks for inventing and writing the GNU/Linux Kernel since 23(!) years!

Hello everybody out there using minix –

I’m doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won’t be big and
professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones. This has been brewing
since april, and is starting to get ready. I’d like any feedback on
things people like/dislike in minix, as my OS resembles it somewhat
(same physical layout of the file-system (due to practical reasons)
among other things).

I’ve currently ported bash(1.08) and gcc(1.40), and things seem to work.
This implies that I’ll get something practical within a few months, and
I’d like to know what features most people would want. Any suggestions
are welcome, but I won’t promise I’ll implement them 🙂

Linus (torv…@kruuna.helsinki.fi)

PS. Yes – it’s free of any minix code, and it has a multi-threaded fs.
It is NOT protable (uses 386 task switching etc), and it probably never
will support anything other than AT-harddisks, as that’s all I have :-(.

Violations on users PIM

January 19th, 2014 No comments

While Apple Computers decided to violate users rights once more, ceasing the capability to synchronise PIM (personal information management) data locally with OS X Mavericks 10.9 (argueing they should store their data in their iCloud. – Bwahahahaha!1!!) there are too many PIM solutions for GNU/Linux users, whereas none of them are really feasible for users who want to switch to Free Software.

While many complain that there are too few GNU/Linux Desktop users and Linus Torvalds claims this to be his “personal failure” the GNU/Linux community fails to offer a seamless integration of GUI (graphical user interface) PIM into their OS. (Which is really sad, as fiddling around with SoGo-connector, lightning etc. does not offer a sustainable solution…)

So here is my solution:
Get DAViCal, install it on your server and get mutt, pycarddav and khal for your desktop(s), get a Jolla and you will have a beautiful and seamless PIM solution using the “good olde command line”.

GNU 30th anniversary

September 27th, 2013 No comments

GNU_30th

I consider that the golden rule requires that if I like a program I
must share it with other people who like it. I cannot in good
conscience sign a nondisclosure agreement or a software license
agreement.

So that I can continue to use computers without violating my principles,
I have decided to put together a sufficient body of free software so that
I will be able to get along without any software that is not free.

30 years ago Richard Stallman started GNU with his announcement of the GNU’s not UNIX project.

Congratulations, Richard!
